At the end of the second installment Dead Man’s Chest, Jack Sparrow the hero-villain protagonist of the story was devoured whole by the Kraken, a mythical beast called upon by the Flying Dutchman (a ghost ship with its crew cursed to sail forever to ferry the dead people crossing the world to the afterlife). The Kraken is in the form of a giant octopus that devours whole ships to do its master’s bidding. Furthermore, the crew of the Flying Dutchman was enslaved by the British East India Company under Lord Beckett and was ordered to capture or all other pirates.

The crew of Barbossa set out to journey to the underworld to fetch Jack. On the way back, the crew had to do the outrageous actually make the boat capsize so as to escape the endless sea of the underworld. Outside in the real world, Jack is confronted by both the British and the pirates was forced to make secret allegiances to both.
